A very famous rapper by the stage-name of Eminem delivered a “freestyle” rap against Donald Trump at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards during a portion of the program called a “cypher” where many other artists take turns delivering raps. In the profanity-laden 5-minute long exercise, Eminem spoke about many hot-button issues in the news including Puerto Rico and gun control relating to the Nevada mass shooting. Marshall Mathers (Eminem’s real name) also spoke about Donald Trump being racist and hiring people who are in the KKK - Steve Bannon. Praise for Obama and defense for Hillary Clinton were also given.
It was sort of strange to see Eminem behave this way on stage, although not unexpected. It was strange because Eminem has been very controversial throughout his career. Mainstream media has levied all sorts of allegations against him. From being a proponent of domestic violence, drug abuse, homophobia, and more. Mather’s performance was also strange because it became a form of art imitating life. One of his more popular songs “Stan” was a story about a person who developed an unhealthy fixation on a celebrity figure. Which is what it appears Eminem, among many other people, have done with Donald Trump.
Much of the actual content of the freestyle rap seemed like it was conceived from an ivory tower in the sky. It was not rooted in the reality of the average person. Just the emotionalism of a confused man interpreting slanted leftist media news stories in the most negative way possible. And in reality, all that this does is serve to galvanize the people who support and/or voted for Trump to do the same thing again in 2020 and in 2024 with Mike Pence. Inane outbursts like the one Eminem displayed here make him and people like him feel good, but work 100% against their own cause.
