Over 1,000 Illegal Immigrants Apprehended in El Paso Sector, Largest Group Ever at Single Time

“More than 1,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents near the U.S.-Mexico border early Wednesday -- the largest ever group of migrants ever apprehended at a single time,” John Roberts and Travis Fedschun report.

“The fact is that [the Rio Grande Valley] is receiving caravan-equivalent numbers every seven days,” Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch said.

“President Trump sent a message of strength and leadership Thursday night when he announced he will impose escalating tariffs on Mexico in a bold move to halt the flow of illegal immigrants and protect our national security,” National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd writes in Fox News. “The congressional inaction we are now witnessing is made worse by Mexico’s refusal to enforce its own immigration laws, which are actually much stronger than our own.”
“Mexico has been all too willing to allow its temporary trouble [to] become our permanent problem. These migrants move across Mexico, often in large caravans, with at least the tacit approval of our southern neighbor, and sometimes with actual active assistance,” Steve Cortes writes in RealClearPolitics. It is in no “way compassionate to encourage or tolerate lawlessness along a porous border, which has led to horrific human exploitation.”
“Americans have heard politicians talk about high drug prices for years . . . But the Trump administration isn’t offering up just talk — we’re delivering results,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar writes in The Kansas City Star. “In December for the first time in 46 years, the official government measure of inflation in drug prices actually dropped for all of 2018.”
“Looking across the Detroit River to Canada, U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta on Wednesday urged the passage of a new trade deal between Canada, Mexico and the United States as a way to spur economic prosperity,” Breana Noble writes in The Detroit News. Emphasizing the new agreement’s labor protections, Secretary Acosta explained that NAFTA lacked such measures—causing automaker jobs to leave Michigan for Mexico. “If we can compete on an even playing field, we can win," he said.
In CNBC, Jeff Cox reports that the American economy grew by 3.1% in the first quarter, yet again beating Wall Street’s expectations. “In the bigger picture, growth easily surpassed what most economists had been expecting at the start of the year.”

West Wing Reads: Democrats Should Forget Impeachment and Turn the Page

Democrats Should Forget Impeachment and Turn the Page

“It would be divisive for the nation and a boon to our global competitors if Democrats choose to hobble our national agenda with superfluous, partisan impeachment,” Carrie Sheffield writes in CNN. “Clearly, Mueller is moving on and it's time for us to move on as a country, too.”

Despite the spin from Congressional Democrats looking for cover to pursue more political, obstructionist investigations, “special counsel Robert Mueller was not secretly gunning for impeachment in his statement on Wednesday . . . By a nearly 20-point margin, the American people do not want impeachment, according to polling by the Washington Post and ABC News. Let's move on and focus on issues that actually help the country, like opioid crisis alleviation, national security, infrastructure and health care.”

“Mr. Mueller’s analysis of the obstruction evidence in his own report makes clear that no investigation was obstructed. Not the FBI’s counterintelligence probe, and not his own. No witnesses were interfered with, and Mr. Mueller was allowed over two years to issue nearly 500 search-and-seizure warrants and interview anyone he wanted, including anyone in the White House,” The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes. The report also “shows beyond doubt, there is no evidence of a conspiracy, broad or narrow.”
Robert Mueller’s “message was another disappointment for Democrats, since it boils down to: I’m not going to help you drag this out,” the New York Post editorial board writes. “Nothing changed after Mueller’s press conference. Except this: Democrats can’t have it both ways — shying from impeachment but wallowing in endless investigations and testimony that create more noise without shedding any new light.”
“Luckily for American agriculture, President Trump negotiated a new trade agreement with Canada and Mexico called the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, commonly referred to as the USMCA, which will help agriculture immensely,” state agriculture officials Chris Chinn, Steve Wellman, and Mike Naig write in The Missouri Times. “Across the country and all industry sectors, the USMCA will create roughly 176,000 jobs and inject more than $68 billion into the economy by increasing exports to Canada and Mexico.”
“Everyone is curious about how such false information could have been pushed up the Obama administration’s chain of command to start a secret examination of a rival political campaign. The Democrats seem curiously uncurious to get to the bottom of the mystery,” The Washington Times editorial board writes.

1600 Daily: Press Secretary Sarah Sanders responds to the end of the Special Counsel investigation

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders responds to the end of the Special Counsel investigation

This morning, Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced the completion of his investigation with a short, prepared address from the Department of Justice headquarters.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders issued the following statement:

“The Special Counsel has completed the investigation, closed his office, and has closed the case. Mr. Mueller explicitly said that he has nothing to add beyond the report, and therefore, does not plan to testify before Congress. The report was clear—there was no collusion, no conspiracy—and the Department of Justice confirmed there was no obstruction. Special Counsel Mueller also stated that Attorney General Barr acted in good faith in his handling of the report. After two years, the Special Counsel is moving on with his life, and everyone else should do the same.”

After a two-year, $35 million investigation that involved 500 witnesses, 500 search warrants, and 2,800 subpoenas, the Special Counsel’s office found no evidence that President Donald J. Trump, any member of his campaign team, or indeed any American citizen conspired with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election.

It’s time to move forward. Mueller announced that he will step down from his role at the Department of Justice now that his investigation is complete, and he concluded today’s remarks by calling on Americans to unite against a real threat: “multiple, systematic efforts” by a foreign government to interfere with our country.

“That allegation deserves the attention of every American,” he said.

From day one, President Trump has taken action to defend America from Russian meddling. The Trump Administration has maintained the closure of 2 Russian compounds—and the expulsion of 35 diplomats—in response to Russian interference in the 2016 election. Last April, the Administration also imposed sanctions against 7 Russian oligarchs, 12 companies they own or control, and 17 senior Russian officials to ensure the oligarchs who profit from Russia’s destabilizing activities face consequences.

“We have been far tougher on Russia than anybody—anybody,” the President says.

President Trump knows that a strong, united, and energy-independent America is the last thing Russia wants to see. An internally divided, dysfunctional Washington, on the other hand, would give Moscow the victory it craves. Which path will Congress choose?

President Trump has stood up to Russia since day one.

Vice President Pence: It’s time for Democrats to focus on the American people.

Protect the social safety net for American citizens

President Trump took an important action last week to protect America’s social safety net for those who need it most. In a new memorandum, the President is directing Federal agencies to fully enforce existing restrictions on the use—and misuse—of income-based welfare programs by non-citizens.

Vast numbers of non-citizens and their families take advantage of our welfare programs. Today, 78 percent of households headed by a non-citizen with no more than a high school education use at least one welfare program. And nearly 60 percent of all households headed by a non-citizen do so.

In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed legislation that required each sponsor of a non-citizen to reimburse the government for any income-based welfare benefits that the non-citizen receives. Since then, the law has been unevenly enforced, putting real strain on the financial support provided for struggling Americans.

With his latest action, President Trump has tasked agencies with issuing guidance to ensure these payments are recovered from sponsors going forward—just as the law says.

To protect benefits for citizens, immigrants must be financially self-sufficient.

DEMOCRATS DEMAND TRUMP IMPEACHMENT AFTER MUELLER SAYS NO COLLUSION IN SPEECH - Mueller's comments are absolutely reprehensible: Former federal prosecutor

DEMOCRATS DEMAND TRUMP IMPEACHMENT AFTER MUELLER SAYS NO COLLUSION IN SPEECH

Democrats planned to impeach president regardless of Special Counsel findings

Congressional Democrats are determined to impeach President Trump despite Special Counsel Mueller’s rare public statement reaffirming no collusion with the Russian government.
All the usual suspects who have been calling for Trump’s impeachment since his swearing-in, including Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.) and even many 2020 presidential candidates, have doubled down, citing Mueller’s remark that only Congress could indict a sitting president.
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who twice had introduced articles of impeachment that later failed, didn’t even wait to hear Mueller’s remarks — he made up his mind years ago.
Notably absent from these impeachment calls are the Democrat leadership, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, likely because they understand that pursuing impeachment would be political suicide for their party.
Pelosi in particular has been trying to tamp down her caucus’s yearning for impeachment after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and other 2020 presidential candidates have pushed for it over the last few months.
The House Speaker even went as far to say that Trump was “goading” her caucus into impeaching him so he’d win the 2020 presidential election.
“Trump — I use his name — Trump is goading us to impeach him,” she said earlier this month. “That’s what he’s doing. Every single day, he’s just like taunting, taunting, taunting.”
Trump responded to Mueller’s latest public statement, saying the “case is closed!”
