Troubled Waters: Italian Govt Closes Port to Migrants as Influx Continues

After two weeks in power, Italy's new governing parties are sticking to its campaign promises. The Interior Minister has closed a port to a vessel carrying migrants. The country's new goal is to protect its borders, he says.

The simple fact is that you can't fix poverty in Africa or the Middle East by inviting in the third world. It won't work. These virtuous actions will ultimately sink the economic viability of Europe, cause conflict and then no one will be helped in the long run. Also the sort of economic migrants coming into Europe are mostly young unskilled men, often of low IQ, that have little prospect of being employed. How many millions of these people can Europe afford to look after (using their generous welfare system) before the system becomes unaffordable and collapses?
