Punk Rock Band Bad Religion's Anti Alt-Right Song Backfires, Bring in New Recruits - Singer Greg Graffin Goes with the Grain & Establishment Against Trump - Baby Boomer Punk Rockers Prove Conservatism is the New Counter-Culture/Punk Rock with Lazy New Song
Editor's Note: I met Greg once in Chicago on the Van's Warped Tour, shook his hand despite his song shunning the handshake and told him he was an inspiration. I guess he is still inspiring me to action, but not like before. I don't agree with everything I see coming from the alt-right, but I understand where it is coming from (Greg does not/is out of touch) and I see eye to eye on much. The spirit of punk rock I had found with my old punk/hardcore band Illithed is alive in modern day conservatism... and as much as I hate to say it, is dead in this "new" punk rock.

Hey Greg, this ranks right up there with "Into the Unknown". What happened? I feel like I've stumbled into some strange alternative parallel reality... where the fascists who want to police your thoughts and speech, and visit violence upon those who dare question their social dogma, proudly call themselves 'anti-fascist' and call everyone else nazis. A place where the left has abandoned equality in favor of equity. Where you are no longer judged on the content of your character, but rather first and foremost on the color of your skin, your gender, identity, and your place in the hierarchy of the social progressive stack. A strange alternate reality where people no longer have a sense of iorny, and no one has read George Orwell.

Fired National Security Council aide says Deep State, Marxist Left targeting Trump in “unprecedented” campaign to remove him from office - Read the Politically Incorrect Memo that Triggered McMaster
Tuesday, August 15, 2017 by JD Heyes
A fired National Security Council official has charged that Left-wing Deep State opponents of President Donald J. Trump are engaged in an “unprecedented” political operation to first delegitimize him and then drive him from office, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Until just recently, Rich Higgins was the director of strategic planning at the NSC. In May he produced a seven-page memo warning of a joint effort by the Marxist Left, Islamists and political and government leaders opposed to Trump to engage in an information warfare campaign aimed at smearing him.
“The Trump administration is suffering under withering information campaigns designed to first undermine, then delegitimize and ultimately remove the president,” said Higgins. “This is not politics as usual but rather political warfare at an unprecedented level that is openly engaged in the direct targeting of a seated president through manipulation of the news cycle.”
The Free Beacon noted further:
Higgins, an Army veteran and former Pentagon official who specialized in irregular warfare and who was dismissed last month for writing the memo, said the attacks should not be confused with normal partisan political attacks or adversarial media attention.
The former aide criticized the White House for failing to counter the activities and said the political warfare attacks threaten the Trump presidency.
“The White House response to these campaigns reflects a political advocacy mindset that it is intensely reactive, severely under-inclusive and dangerously inadequate to the threat,” Higgins noted. “If action is not taken to re-scope and respond to these hostile campaigns very soon, the administration risks implosion and subsequent early departure from the White House.” (Related: Mueller’s special counsel effort has become nothing more than taxpayer funded “opposition research” to defeat Trump in 2020)
Higgins was dismissed by Deputy National Security Advisor Ricky Waddell July 21 after the memo came to his attention during an internal search for leakers on staff.
The Trump administration has been battling against leaks since before the president took office, but Trump’s naming of John Kelly as his chief of staff, moving him from his post as head of the Department of Homeland Security, was seen as a way to restore discipline to the White House. Kelly is a former four-star Marine general, and his move to the West Wing was lauded even by some Trump opponents.
Higgins’ firing has not been without controversy. His termination, along with those of fellow NSC conservatives Derek Harvey and Ezra Cohen-Watnick in recent days, has touched off a range of political brinksmanship and infighting within the White House. In addition, conservatives charge that Trump’s national security advisor, H.R. McMaster, is actually working to thwart the president’s populist foreign policy agenda in favor of keeping policies enacted or carried on by the former Obama administration.
Harvey, a retired Army colonel, complained to McMaster recently about the outsized number of people remaining at the NSC from the Obama administration. People close to the situation said McMaster told him he’s got a “leadership problem,” which is military jargon for, “Get in line with my program or I’ll get rid of you.”
It appears McMasters chose for his subordinate and picked the latter option.
Cohen-Watnick, meanwhile, was the senior director for intelligence programs at the National Security Council; he reportedly dropped out of favor with McMaster over the former’s conservative views.
The Free Beacon reported that a White House official said McMasters appears to be attempting to get rid of anyone on the NSC who is an ardent, outspoken supporter of Trump, while taking the slow approach to implementing any presidential directive he does not agree with.
Though the president has vocalized support for McMaster in recent weeks, the Free Beacon said White House sources say Trump is not happy with him and may send him to Afghanistan soon. A potential replacement would be CIA Director Mike Pompeo, regarded as much more of a Trump supporter.

POTUS & POLITICAL WARFARE by Rich Higgins
BACKGROUND. The Trump administration is suffering under withering information campaigns designed to first undermine, then delegitimize and ultimately remove the President. Possibly confusing these attacks with an elevated interplay of otherwise normal D.C. partisan infighting and adversarial media relations, the White House response to these campaigns reflects a political advocacy mindset that it is intensely reactive, severely under-inclusive and dangerously inadequate to the threat. If action is not taken to re-scope and respond to these hostile campaigns very soon, the administration risks implosion and subsequent early departure from the White House.
This is not politics as usual but rather political warfare at an unprecedented level that is openly engaged in the direct targeting of a seated president through manipulation of the news cycle. It must be recognized on its own terms so that immediate action can be taken. At its core, these campaigns run on multiple lines of effort, serve as the non-violent line of effort of a wider movement, and execute political warfare agendas that reflect cultural Marxist outcomes. The campaigns operate through narratives.
Because the hard left is aligned with Islamist organizations at local (ANTIFA working with Muslim Brotherhood doing business as MSA and CAIR), national (ACLU and BLM working with CAIR and MPAC) and international levels (OIC working with OSCE and the UN), recognition must given to the fact that they seamlessly interoperate at the narrative level as well. In candidate Trump, the opposition saw a threat to the “politically correct” enforcement narratives they’ve meticulously laid in over the past few decades. In President Trump, they see a latent threat to continue that effort to ruinous effect and their retaliatory response reflects this fear.
INTRODUCTION. Responding to relentless personal assaults on his character, candidate Trump identified the players and the strategy:
- “The establishment and their media enablers will control over this nation through means that are very well known. Anyone who challenges their control is deemed a sexist, a racist, a xenophobe, and morally deformed.” — President Trump, Oct 2016
Culturally conditioned to limit responses to such attacks as yet another round in the on-going drone from diversity and multicultural malcontents, these broadsides are discounted as political correctness run amuck. However, political correctness is a weapon against reason and critical thinking. This weapon functions as the enforcement mechanism of diversity narratives that seek to implement cultural Marxism. Candidate Trump’s rhetoric in the campaign not only cut through the Marxist narrative, he did so in ways that were viscerally comprehensible to a voting bloc that then made candidate Trump the president; making that bloc self-aware in the process. President Trump is either the candidate he ran as, or he is nothing.
Recognizing in candidate Trump an existential threat to cultural Marxist memes that dominate the prevailing cultural narrative, those that benefit recognize the threat he poses and seek his destruction. For this cabal, Trump must be destroyed. Far from politics as usual, this is a political warfare effort that seeks the destruction of a sitting president. Since Trump took office, the situation has intensified to crisis level proportions. For those engaged in the effort, especially those from within the “deep state” or permanent government apparatus, this raises clear Title 18 (legal) concerns.
DISCUSSION.
The Opposition. While opposition to President Trump manifests itself through political warfare memes centered on cultural Marxist narratives, this hardly means that opposition is limited to Marxists as conventionally understood. Having become the dominant cultural meme, some benefit from it while others are captured by it; including “deep state” actors, globalists, bankers, Islamists, and establishment Republicans. Through the campaign, candidate Trump tapped into a deep vein of concern among many citizens that America is at risk and is slipping away. Globalists and Islamists recognize that for their visions to succeed, America, both as an ideal and as a national and political identity, must be destroyed. Atomization of society must also occur at the individual level; with attacks directed against all levels of group and personal identity. Hence the sexism, racism and xenophobia memes. As a Judeo-Christian culture, forced inclusion of post-modern notions of tolerance is designed to induce nihilistic contradictions that reduce all thought, all faith, all loyalties to meaninglessness. Group rights based on sex or ethnicity are a direct assault on the very idea of individual human rights and natural law around which the Constitution was framed. “Transgender acceptance” memes attack at the most basic level by denying a person the right to declare the biological fact of one’s sex. When a population has 2 + 2 = 5 imposed on it, there are many that benefit:
- Mainstream Media — The principle mechanism for implementing narratives.
- The Academy — Academia has served as a principle counter-state node for some time and remains a key conduit for creating future adherents to cultural Marxist narratives and their derivative worldview.
- The Deep State — The successful outcome of cultural Marxism is a bureaucratic state beholden to no one, certainly not the American people. With no rule of law considerations outside those that further deep state power, the deep state truly becomes, as Hegel advocated, god bestriding the earth.
- Global Corporatists & Bankers — Exploitation of populations, unfettered by national protections and notions of personal morality and piety.
- Democratic Leadership — The democratic leadership has been a counter-state enabler that executes, sustains, and protects cultural Marxist programs of action and facilitates the relentless expansion of the deep state.
- Republican Leadership — More afraid of being accused of being called a racist, sexist, homophobe or Islamophobe than of failing to enforce their oaths to “support and defend the Constitution,” the Republican Establishment accepts and enforces cultural Marxist memes within its own sphere of operations. In doing so, knowingly or not, it becomes an agent of that. These “conservatives” become increasingly indistinguishable from their democratic counter-parts save that they misrepresent themselves to their constituents. Lacking the discernment to recognize their situation, they will work with globalists, corporatists, and the international financial interests and will likewise service the deep state. These establishment Republicans are the hard left’s designated defeat mechanism in the destruction of the old regime as well as the American ideal. Because candidate Trump publicly exposed them for their duplicitous activities, they are at risk as long as Trump can turn on them and are, therefore, bitter foes. Candidate Trump’s success remains an ongoing existential threat to establishment Republicans.
- Islamists — Islamists ally with cultural Marxist because, as far back as the 1980s, they properly assessed that the hard left has a strong chance of reducing Western civilization to its benefit. Having co-opted post-modern narratives as critical points, Islamists deploy these narrative to strategically blind and then control US decision makers. This is by design and purposeful. “By their own hands!” has been the declared strategy of the Muslim Brotherhood since 1991. This strategy seeks to divide American society against itself with the forced imposition of Islamist objectives on one half of American society by the other half. Once a society has been effectively atomized, the population will have lost its faith in the old order, detest those who reduced it, and divide along the lines of narrative adherence. This is the intended outcome of hostile information cum political warfare campaigns and today we see their effects on American society.
Complicating the current situation, many close to the president have pushed him off his message when he was candidate Trump thus alienating him from his base thereby isolating him in the process. When President Trump is not candidate Trump, he becomes dangerously exposed. While the base that elected candidate Trump identified with his vision, they are only Trump’s insofar as he holds to the vision that made him president.
Political Warfare Attacks — A Primer. As used here, “political warfare” does not concern activities associated with the American political process but rather exclusively refers to political warfare as understood by the Maoist Insurgency model. Political warfare is one of the five components of a Maoist insurgency. Maoist methodologies employ synchronized violent and non-violent actions that focus on mobilization of individuals and groups to action. This approach envisions the direct use of non-violent operational arts and tactics as elements of combat power. In Maoist insurgencies, the formation of a counter-state is essential to seizing state power. Functioning as a hostile competing state acting within an existing state, it has an alternate infrastructure. Political warfare operates as one of the activities of the “counter-state” and is primarily focused on the resourcing and mobilization of the counter state or the exhaustion and demobilization of the targeted political movement. Political warfare methods can be implemented at strategic, operational, or tactical levels of operation.
Political warfare is warfare. Strategic information campaigns designed to delegitimize through disinformation arise out of non-violent lines of effort in political warfare regimes. They principally operate through narratives. Because the left is aligned with Islamist organizations at local, national and international levels, recognition should be given to the fact that they seamlessly interoperate through coordinated synchronized interactive narratives.
Cultural Marxism — A Primer. While the attacks on President Trump arise out of political warfare considerations based on non-kinetic lines of effort (as discussed below), they operate in a battle-space prepared, informed and conditioned by cultural Marxist drivers. In practical terms, the political warfare assault on President Trump cannot be separated from the cultural Marxist narratives that drive them. From an operational preparation of the environment perspective, President Trump is operating in a battle-space that reflects the left’s vision.
As used in this discussion, cultural Marxism relates to programs and activities that arise out of Gramsci Marxism, Fabian Socialism and most directly from the Frankfurt School. The Frankfurt strategy deconstructs societies through attacks on culture by imposing a dialectic that forces unresolvable contradictions under the rubric of critical theory. The result is induced nihilism, a belief in everything that is actually the belief in nothing.
That post-modern (diversity/multiculturalism) narratives seeks to implement cultural Marxist objectives can be demonstrated by reference to founding Frankfurt School theorist Herbert Marcuse’s repurposing of the term tolerance. In a 1965 paper, Marcuse defined tolerance as intolerance; said it can be implemented through undemocratic means to stop chauvinism (xenophobia), racism, discrimination; and should be extended to the left while denied to the right:
- “The realization of the objective of tolerance would call for intolerance toward prevailing policies, attitudes, opinions, and the extension of tolerance to policies, attitudes, and opinions which are outlawed or suppressed.”
- “Surely, no government can be expected to foster its own subversion, but in a democracy such a right is vested in the people (i.e. in the majority of the people). This means that the ways should not be blocked on which a subversive majority could develop, and if they are blocked by organized repression and indoctrination, their reopening may require apparently undemocratic means. They would include the withdrawal of toleration of speech and assembly from groups and movements which promote aggressive policies, armament, chauvinism, discrimination on the grounds of race and religion, or which oppose the extension of public services, social security, medical care, etc.” (8–9)
- “Liberating tolerance, then, would mean intolerance against movements from the Right and toleration of movements from the Left. As to the scope of this tolerance and intolerance: … it would extend to the stage of action as well as of discussion and propaganda, of deed as well as of word.” (12)
It is through such post-modern constructs that interoperable narratives are established among various left-wing groups as well as between them and Islamist groups at all levels. For example, from the 2001 Conference of Foreign Ministers at Bamako, Mali, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) declared its commitment to fight racism and xenophobia and then declared Islamophobia a “contemporary form of racism”:
- In this context, the World Conference urges all states . . . take all necessary measures to combat hatred, discrimination, intolerance and acts of violence, intimidation and coercion motivated by racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance particularly against Islam
- Racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance which display an increasing trend, in their most subtle and contemporary forms, constitute a violation of human rights. 3. Contemporary forms of racism are based on discrimination and disparagement on a cultural, rather than biological basis. In this content, the increasing trend of Islamophobia, as a distinct form of xenophobia in non-Muslim societies is very alarming.
That the OIC made these claims as part of its planned inputs to the United Nation’s “Third World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance” further demonstrates the coordinated and interoperable nature of these narratives at international levels in international forums.
As cultural Marxist narratives intensify, they are to be further operationalized in the form of hate speech narratives. Hate speech narratives are non-random, coordinated, and fully interoperable escalations of cultural Marxist memes. Key international players include the European Union, the UN, and the OSCE, the OIC and the International Muslim Brotherhood. Hate speech memes are structured, coordinated, and implemented through these same international forums. They involve close coordination with media and social media and include the Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) narratives. David Shipler’s book Freedom of Speech provides a road map for how hate speech narratives are to be structured, deployed and enforced.
Battlespace. These attack narratives are pervasive, full spectrum and institutionalized at all levels. They operate in social media, television, the 24-hour news cycle in all media, and are entrenched at the upper levels of the bureaucracies and within the foreign policy establishment. They inform the entertainment industry from late night monologues, to situation comedies, to television series memes, to movie themes. The effort required to direct this capacity at President Trump is little more than a programming decision to do so. The cultural Marxist narrative is fully deployed, pervasive, full spectrum and ongoing. Regarding the president, attacks have become a relentless 24/7 effort.
While there is certainly a Marxist agenda and even Islamist motivations that must be seriously addressed in their own right, these motivations alone seem inadequate to explain the scope and magnitude of the effort directed against the president. The economic drivers behind the Marxist and Islamist ideologues are enormously influential and seek to leverage these ideological movements for their own self interests. While beyond the actual scope of this document, the benefactors of these political movements include; Urban Real Estate who depend greatly on immigrant tenants, International Banking who seeks to maintain US debtor status so as to control the application of American power, and elements of the business sector that depend upon immigrant labor or government infrastructure. The overall objective of these economic forces is the forced urbanization of the populace, thereby necessitating a larger, more powerful government. In summary, this is a form of population control by certain business cartels in league with cultural Marxists/corporatists/Islamists who will leverage Islamic terrorism threats to justify the creation of a police state.
Adversary Campaign Plan. Political Warfare has been described as “propaganda in battledress.” The effort directed at President Trump is executed along one overt, as well as two covert, lines of effort:
The overt line of effort is PUBLICITY. Publicity is the straightforward projection of a case that builds a picture in the audience’s mind designed to garner support. It is facts without context and information the adversary wants the audience to possess that creates an impression and sets conditions. It seeks to establish good will and receptiveness to additional inputs.
There are two covert lines of effort: PROPOGANDA and INFILTRATION/SUBVERSION.
Propaganda is the deliberate direction, even manipulation, of information to secure a definite outcome. It is an attempt to direct the thinking of the recipient, without his conscious collaboration, into predetermined channels that are established in the Publicity line of effort. It is the unwitting conditioning of the recipient by devious methods with an ulterior motive that seeks to move them incrementally over time into greater belief and acceptance of message transmitted in the Publicity line of effort.
Infiltration and subversion operate internal to the targeted organization in order to inform, target, coordinate, and amplify the effects of the publicity and propaganda. Both operate to gather intelligence, obstruct legitimate courses of action, provide inside information, and leak sensitive information that undermines the leadership and suppresses the morale of friendly elements.
Infiltration of political and social groups within a target state is done for the purpose of extending counter-state influence and control. The endgame is concealed and may involve illicit activities.
Subversion undermines or detaches the loyalties of significant political and social groups within the target state and transfers political and/or ideological loyalties to the counter-state. As the counter-state forms, a counter-elite of influential individual and key leaders within the target state will later facilitate the legitimacy and permanency of the new regime.
Political warfare employs both publicity and propaganda. It recognizes no intrinsic virtue in the news but rather envisions it as a mechanism to exploit and build up support. From a political warfare perspective, control of the news cycle is the most potent means of attracting and building up a favorable audience. As it relates to the news cycle, publicity and propaganda can be merged to form a “pseudo-publicity” that is presented as news in furtherance of sustaining pseudo-realities maintained by cultural Marxist memes. Pseudo-publicity treatment of President Trump dominates the news cycle. The current campaign against President Trump operates in the following manner:
The Meta Narrative. Meta narratives seeks to delegitimize President Trump, his administration, and the vision of America he projected as a candidate. With cultural Marxist memes serving as the backdrop, President Trump is to be relentlessly characterized as unfit through the use of supporting narratives acting to move unwitting populations to belief in the meta narrative. Hence:
“President Trump is illegitimate”
“President Trump is corrupt”
“President Trump is dishonest”
Note that the twitter accounts and mainstream media personalities pushing this narrative have seen their audience numbers rise greatly in the past 6 months. This is a direct result of the supporting and backdrop narratives channeling individuals to this meta-narrative.
Supporting Narratives. Meta-narratives are supported by an ongoing series supporting-narratives that can be swapped out as circumstances warrant. It is important to recognize that these stories do not have to be true, valid or accurate to serve their purpose. Over time, deserved or not, the cumulative effect of these supporting narratives will result in a Trump fatigue. From a political warfare perspective, President Trump’s inability to meet this challenge will cast him as a weak failed leader. The current list of supporting narratives include:
“Russia hacked the election” — illegitimate
“Obstruction of Justice” — corrupt
“Hiding Collusion” — dishonest
“Putin Puppet” — treasonous
Backdrop Narratives. The backdrop to the meta and supporting narratives are cultural Marxist memes designed to sustain a general sense of loathing of President Trump and the America that elected him. Hence:
“[meta] President Trump is illegitimate, [supporting] he was elected because of Russian hacking, [backdrop] and besides, he a racist, sexist xenophobe.”
Adversaries utilize these interlocking narratives as a defensive political and information warfare screen that silences critics and smears supporters of President Trump. When people in the media question the behavior, actions and decisions of the Trump Administration’s opponents, they are immediately said to be “working for the Russians” or “supporting Russian propaganda.” Individual Americans who support the President are deemed “deplorable” and “racist.”
End State. Attacks on President Trump are not just about destroying him, but also about destroying the vision of America that lead to his election. Those individuals and groups seeking the destruction of President Trump actually seek to suffocate the vision of America that made him president. Hence, the end state is not just a delegitimized, destabilized, immobilized and possibly destroyed presidency; but also a demoralized movement composed of a large enough bloc to elect a president that subsequently become self-aware of its own disenfranchisement.
CONCLUSION.
The recent turn of events give rise to the observation that the defense of President Trump is the defense of America. In the same way President Lincoln was surrounded by political opposition both inside and outside of his wire, in both overt and covert forms, so too is President Trump. Had Lincoln failed, so too would have the Republic. The administration has been maneuvered into a constant back-pedal by relentless political warfare attacks structured to force him to assume a reactive posture that assures inadequate responses. The president can either drive or be driven by events; it’s time for him to drive them.

NEW STUDY FINDS DEMOCRATS MOVING LEFT, DRIVING GROWING PARTISAN GAP
Think tank finds difference between parties greater than ever
Charles Fain Lehman | Free Beacon - OCTOBER 11, 2017
A new study from the Pew Research Center shows a growing partisan gap in opinions on major issues, driven in part by Democrats’ leftward drift.
Pew found Democrats have moved substantially left on a variety of issues while Republicans’ views remain relatively constant. That was true across social and economic issues; Pew claimed that the split between Republicans and Democrats is more pronounced than any divides by race, gender, or socioeconomic status.
“This poll and some other recent ones show that Democrats are pulling more strongly to the left and Republicans are not pulling quite as strongly to the right as a general matter,” said Karlyn Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute who specializes in American public opinion.
One such leftward shift came in Pew’s question about welfare. As to whether or not the government “should do more to help the needy, even if it means going deeper into debt,” 71 percent of Democrats respond affirmatively, up 17 points over the past six years.
Republicans' opinions have barely shifted, down slightly from 25 to 24 percent. Additionally, some 76 percent of Democrats say "poor people have hard lives because government benefits don't go far enough"—the highest proportion of Democrats since Pew started asking the question in 1994.

Hello! I am from Brazil and we are facing cultural Marxism and its consequences (corruption, counter - information, scrapping of education, destruction of culture). I would like you to know about the existence of the '' São Paulo Forum ''. Communist organization founded in 1990 by former President Lula, Fidel Castro, with the participation of Evo Morales, Rafael Corrêa. It helped to put dictator Hugo Chavez in power in Venezuela.
This is a very difficult and controversial subject, of great concern to the Américas (north, central of the south).
We fear the progress of this organization, which does not cease its activities and is the core of corruption on the continent. Thank you very much for your attention!

LGBT activists slam ‘the most important psychiatrist of the last half-century’ because he debunks transgender ideology
Peter LaBarbera
May 15, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — The homosexual-transgender pressure group Human Rights Campaign has declared political war on world-renowned psychiatrist Dr. Paul McHugh, the leading mental health expert speaking out against radical “gender ideology.”
May 15, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — The homosexual-transgender pressure group Human Rights Campaign has declared political war on world-renowned psychiatrist Dr. Paul McHugh, the leading mental health expert speaking out against radical “gender ideology.”
McHugh, whose many honors include receiving the top award of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences’ (NAS) Institutes of Medicine, is the target of a special HRC attack-website, “McHugh Exposed,” which accuses him of peddling “junk science.”
It is an odd accusation to make against one of the most celebrated mental health professionals and researchers alive today. McHugh is credited with major research discoveries, including being “the first to describe increased cortisol secretion associated with depression, an accomplishment that led to the development of a test to identify serious depression by physical means,” according to the NAS.
“His extensive work studying the control of food intake revealed how gastrointestinal and neurophysiologic mechanisms regulate caloric intake in primates and are disrupted in people with eating disorders,” states the NAS release.
Last year, the editors of The New Atlantis, in publishing a special edition on sexuality and gender in their journal co-written by Dr. McHugh, called him “arguably the most important psychiatrist of the last half-century.”
Many honors, stellar pedigree
Dr. McHugh’s professional biography reads like a Who’s Who of American psychiatry and medicine. A Harvard College and Harvard Medical School graduate, Dr. McHugh was Henry Phipps Professor and Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1975 to 2001.
He is the author many books, including The Perspectives of Psychiatry, described by the NAS as “a treatise on practice methods and principles, [which] has been lauded as one of the most influential psychiatry texts in the last century.”
In 1998, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, rated by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top medical schools in the world, named Dr. McHugh the University Distinguished Service Professor. In 2015, it named a new program after him, as he became the inaugural Director of the Paul R. McHugh Program for Human Flourishing, located within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences,” according to the school’s website.
Dr. McHugh was elected to the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine in 1992, and in 2008 received its Sarnat International Prizein Mental Health for “outstanding achievement in improving mental health.”
In 2001, he was appointed by President Bush to the President’s Council on Bioethics and in 2002 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People, investigating the homosexual sex-abuse scandal.
McHugh also served as Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University School of Medicine, Clinical Director and Director of Residency Education at the New York Hospital Westchester Division, and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Oregon Health Sciences Center, according to his Johns Hopkins bio.
‘Amused’ at HRC slander
In a recent interview with LifeSiteNews, McHugh, 85, said he was “amused” by HRC’s online attack-site demonizing him, and said he will not be intimidated from speaking out against the current “craze” of transgender surgeries and hormone therapies pursued by gender-confused people seeking to “become” the opposite sex.
“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved,” he said, noting in particular his election to the prestigious National Academy of Science’s (NAS) Institute of Medicine, and the recognition and honors he has received from colleagues in the psychiatric and medical fields. “I’ve been a part of American psychiatry for more than 50 years.”
“These are things they [HRC] wouldn’t even understand,” he said. “They want to portray me as some kind of crank.”
According to the National Academy of Sciences website, “NAS Members are elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Membership is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive.”
In addition to the NAS prize, McHugh “has received many professional honors, including the Paul Hoch Award of the American Psychopathological Association, Joseph Zubin Award of the American Psychopathological Association, and the William C. Menninger Award from the American College of Physicians,” NAS stated.
HRC and other pro-LGBTQ organizations are trying to discredit McHugh because he is the most respected medical and psychiatric authority debunking transsexual “gender change” ideology, which includes recommending “sex reassignment” surgical reconstructions — even minors —of healthy sexual organs to imitate body characteristics of the opposite sex.
“McHugh's effort to give a veneer of academic integrity to transphobic junk science is part of a broader disturbing trend: the use of misleading, badly designed or completely unscientific ‘research’ to attack LGBTQ people and their families,” says HRC on its anti-McHugh site.
HRC, the world’s largest and best-funded homosexual-transgender lobby organization, has a long history of demonizing socially conservative opponents of LGBTQ activism, as well as researchers like McHugh who do not line up with LGBT goals.
This is only the latest iteration of the LGBT movement’s successful, ongoing strategy — honed over nearly five decades — of assailing and demonizing dissenters from pro-homosexual ideology as “bigots,” irrational haters, “homophobes” and, now, “transphobes.”
For example, in 2014, HRC viciously slammed leading pro-family advocates who have spoken outside the United States in opposition to homosexual and “transgender” activism. Relying on factually inaccurate and distorted information to smear the social conservatives as “Exporters of Hate,” HRC even used darkened, photo-negative-type drawings of its targets’ faces to make them appear sinister.
Dr. McHugh a ‘Transphobe’?
As for Dr. McHugh, this is hardly the first time he has been disparaged by critics, or even labeled a “transphobe.” Two years ago, Zack Ford, the “LGBTQ editor” of the leftist Think Progress, wrote a hit-piece in which he applied the trendy “transgender” attack-term “transphobe” to McHugh. (Like the invented term “homophobe,” its cousin, “transphobe,” wrongly suggests that people who oppose accommodating extreme gender confusion “fear” those afflicted.)
In response, Ryan Anderson, senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, tweeted, “Dr. McHugh is an accomplished medical professional completely devoted to the health of his patients. Liberal attacks on him are disgusting.”
Anderson followed up on that tweet with another, “Attacks on Dr. McHugh are amazing: It's not the man who thinks he's a woman who has mental issues, it's the doctor who dares speak truth.”
After McHugh and co-editor Lawrence Mayer published their widely-circulated Fall 2016 New Atlantis Special Report on “Sexuality and Gender,” nearly 600 “experts on LGBT health” published a letter opposing the document, stating that it “does not represent prevailing expert consensus opinion about sexual orientation or gender identity related research or clinical care,” the Daily Beast reported.
However, whereas the 143-page New Atlantis report was documented by 25 pages of endnotes, the opposing letter from the outraged pro-homosexual and pro-transgender “experts” was short and failed to point out where his New Atlantis report was wrong, McHugh said.
Even the liberal Daily Beast seemed embarrassed by the lightweight, pro-LGBTQ counter-response, noting the opposition “letter is indeed short, clocking in at under 300 words.”
Devastating Wall Street Journal op-ed
McHugh’s popularity on the national stage among conservatives grew after The Wall Street Journal published his op-ed, “Transgender Surgery Is Not the Solution,” in 2014. The Journal piece is cited regularly by opponents of “transgender” activism the world over. McHugh writes:
“[P]olicy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention. This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken — it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes.”
Pro-“transgender” ideologues bristled at McHugh’s comparison of, say, a gender-confused man who looks at the mirror and says to himself, “I’m a woman,” to a gaunt, anorexic woman who looks in the mirror and says, “I’m so fat.” Writes Dr. McHugh:
“The transgendered suffer a disorder of ‘assumption’ like those in other disorders familiar to psychiatrists. With the transgendered, the disordered assumption is that the individual differs from what seems given in nature — namely one's maleness or femaleness. Other kinds of disordered assumptions are held by those who suffer from anorexia and bulimia nervosa, where the assumption that departs from physical reality is the belief by the dangerously thin that they are overweight. …
McHugh writes that changing your sex is “biologically impossible:”
“People who undergo sex-reassignment surgery do not change from men to women or vice versa. Rather, they become feminized men or masculinized women. Claiming that this is a civil-rights matter and encouraging surgical intervention is in reality to collaborate with and promote a mental disorder.”
In his WSJ essay, Dr. McHugh notes that a follow-up study in LGBT-tolerant Sweden found that people who had “sex reassignment surgery” had a suicide death rate “almost 20-fold above the comparable non-transgender population.”
He compares pro-transgender school “diversity counselors” who encourage “transgender” students to embrace gender-confused identities to “cult leaders,” noting that 80 percent of “very young, often prepubescent children” who believe they are in the wrong-sexed body “would abandon their confusion and grow naturally into adult life if untreated.”
Regarding these very young, supposedly “transgender” children, McHugh writes, “Misguided doctors at medical centers including Boston's Children's Hospital have begun trying to treat this behavior by administering puberty-delaying hormones to render later sex-change surgeries less onerous — even though the drugs stunt the children's growth and risk causing sterility.”
He said transsexual “medical interventions” on children “come close to child abuse. A better way to help these children: with devoted parenting.”
Pro-family leaders defend McHugh
A pro-family leader and doctor who, like McHugh, is under attack from the pro-LGBT Left has similarly called performing “sex reassignment surgeries” and puberty-blocking “transgender” hormone therapy on gender-confused children “child abuse.”
Dr. Michelle Cretella, president of the conservative pediatricians group American College of Pediatricians (AcPeds), has high praise for the Johns Hopkins psychiatrist.
“Dr. Paul McHugh is a highly accomplished academic researcher and clinical psychiatrist. I am an ordinary licensed general pediatrician who practiced for 15 years before dedicating myself full time to motherhood and evidence-based child advocacy in the American College of Pediatricians. We became good friends in part because we have the same enemies,” Dr. Cretella told LifeSiteNews.
Among those shared enemies is the leftist Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which labeled Florida-based AcPeds a “hate group,” along with dozens of other conservative, pro-natural-family organizations — lopping them in with truly hateful groups like the racist Aryan Nation and KKK as a way to destroy their credibility. The media often report the false SPLC description as fact.
In its attack-site against Dr. McHugh, HRC, echoes SPLC’s tendentious labeling, referring to Dr. Cretella’s group as “a recognized hate group that attempts to impersonate the legitimate American Academy of Pediatrics.”
Dr. Cretella said the HRC’s attacks “are most often ad hominem, or else they are misrepresentations of science and of what we have actually written or said.”
“They are factually baseless. A quote attributed to George Orwell sums it up best: ‘In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.’ Such is the current state of medicine — indeed of our entire culture — on all matters sexual,” she said.
“Truth is the enemy of the sexual revolution,” Cretella said. “Reality itself must be suppressed for the full sexual agenda to be realized. Therefore, those who proclaim it will be relentlessly attacked until they are silenced.”
Former “transsexual” Walt Heyer of SexChangeRegret.com, who went through the body-destroying, “male-to-female” “bottom” surgery before realizing that adopting a female identity was not the solution to his problems, agrees with Dr. Cretella and said it will be very difficult for the LGBT Left to “take down” the esteemed McHugh.
“The problem for HRC is that Paul McHugh is the brightest, most well-informed psychiatrist on the issue of transgenderism in the world. He knows the science,” Heyer told LifeSiteNews.
“This is disordered thinking,” said Heyer, who has become a friend of Dr. McHugh. “It’s people trying to escape the pain” of past traumas, usually in their childhood.
Heyer himself was sexually and physically abused as a boy, and when he was very young, whenever his grandmother babysat him, she dressed him up in a purple dress like a girl. That undermined his masculinity and helped create a false, alternate female personality, “Laura,” in his mind.
Johns Hopkins resumes body-disfiguring “transgender” operations
Under pressure from HRC and transgender activists, Johns Hopkins announced last year, “We have committed to and will soon begin providing gender-affirming surgery as another important element of our overall care program,” as LifeSiteNews reported. It did so as part of its “unequivocal and profound commitment to the LGBTQ community.”
That was a big setback to Dr. McHugh, who in 1979 famously put an end to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine performing “sex reassignment surgeries” (now called “gender reassignment surgeries” by “trans” advocates) after he took over as the hospital’s chief of psychiatry.
Dr. McHugh argues that body-disfiguring operations do not solve the “problem” of “transgender” individuals.
“A doctor who prescribes a treatment should understand the nature of the problem he is treating,” he told LifeSiteNews. “It’s not a biological problem. It’s a psychological problem needing psychological treatment.”
McHugh said he was “not shocked, but disappointed” that Johns Hopkins chose to resume doing the “sex reassignment” operations. He said there are a different set of outside pressures on an institution like Johns Hopkins compared to a mere individual like himself.
Nevertheless, he told LifeSiteNews, “Johns Hopkins doesn’t have to kowtow to these activists. … I keep telling them that they will come to regret it someday.”
HRC ‘Orwellian’?
In an age of “don’t judge me” liberal “snowflakes,” McHugh is refreshingly old school, one who fights for his convictions but welcomes debate and opposing arguments as part of a free, yet civil, exchange of ideas.
As the Baltimore Sun reported, McHugh used his prestige and influence at Johns Hopkins to secure a rare, formal, institutional affirmation of the right of researchers and professors to disagree with prevailing ideologies — a rarity in today’s academia.
In a letter titled "Johns Hopkins Medicine's Commitment to the LGBT Community," Johns Hopkins published a letter stressing "’strong and unambiguous’" support of the LGBT community and made clear that when ‘individuals associated with Johns Hopkins exercise the right of expression, they do not speak on behalf of the institution,’" the Sun reported.
But the letter also affirmed what was once a universal value of American higher education, the Sun reported: “the freedom to express contrarian views. ‘Academic freedom is among our fundamental principles,’ it said, ‘essential to the self-correcting nature of scientific inquiry, and a privilege that we safeguard.’"
McHugh told The New York Times in 2002, “What I am looking for is a conversation,” “a broad-ranging conversation in which all the doors are expected to be open. And if they’re closed, we’re going to open them.”
But civility with moral opponents historically has not been a hallmark of the LGBTQ movement, nor the Left in general. Rather than engaging their opponents freely and fairly in the public square, HRC, GLAAD and other homosexual and transgender activist groups often have resorted to name-calling against their foes, or lobbying the media not to publish “anti-gay” (or now “anti-trans”) viewpoints.
Usually, LGBT activists employ a tactic called “bracketing” in which they equate people with sincerely-held moral beliefs opposed to homosexuality and gender rebellion to anti-social “haters,” “bigots” and “phobes.” They also compare moral-minded opponents to racists. But the late Ken “Hutch” Hutcherson, who was black, responded, “Don’t compare you sin to my skin.”
In 2007, an HRC staffer threatened to pull out of a corporate “diversity” discussion if the lone Christian conservative on the panel was not disinvited. The panel organizer buckled and apologetically disinvited the pro-family advocate.
With such intolerance in mind, Dr. McHugh told LifeSiteNews that the Human Rights Campaign is “Orwellian” because, in the name of “rights,” it seeks to shut down and demonize opponents, all the while extolling “diversity,” “inclusion,” and “equality.”
“They call themselves the Human ‘Rights’ Campaign as they take our rights away!” Dr. McHugh said.
Noting that HRC is on the “warpath” against him, and “trying to send me down the memory hole,” he said, “I don’t think they can do too much to me.” He said he believes his position is safe at Johns Hopkins.
And he remained confident that the media-hyped “fad” of transgenderism will fade as more and more Americans realize that performing radical operations on the bodies of self-described “transgender” men, women — and especially children — to match their confused “feelings” is “mistreatment.”
“This craze is going to come apart, as crazes always do,” he said.
