During the now-infamous press conference Donald Trump held on Thursday, February 16th 2017, a black reporter named April Ryan asked Donald Trump about involving the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in his plan for inner city/urban development. Trump responded by saying yes he would love to meet with them. He also asked the reporter if she knew them and if she could set up the meeting. The reporter responded that she did know some of them but she was just a reporter. News media got hold of the story and has now spun it into Trump being a racist, or at least… racially insensitive.
Which is an absurd notion. The reporter is a black woman and brought up a specifically black centered question. The logical thing to do would be for Trump to ask if the woman knows some of them since she brought it up. It’s not like he randomly picked her out of the crowd and asked her a black-related question. And of course the answer to his question was yes. The Congressional Black Caucus is mentioned on the website of the employer of April Ryan which is the American Urban Radio Networks. AURN is a black oriented radio network. Furthermore, Donald Trump mentioned that he tried to get a meeting with black congressman Elijah Cummings, but was eventually unsuccessful in doing so. Even though Cummings was enthusiastic about the meeting at first.
The Congressional Black Caucus responded to Donald Trump by saying that they heard nothing back from a letter they sent him right around inauguration time asking for cooperation. Which appears to be some form of damage control for not having arranged a meeting yet. Because a letter asking for cooperation is not necessarily the equivalent to a letter requesting a meeting about a specific topic. Maybe because they have no specific topics to discuss. In order to have a meeting with high level administration, you need to bring some actionable ideas to the table. Something the Congressional Black Caucus has not ever been known for. All they are known for is throwing extravagant black parties in Washington DC. Partying is not an actionable idea to bring to Trump as a way to help the black community they purport themselves to represent.
